CHARIOTS OF FIRE BEACH RUN 25th  June   Start Time 18:15  Place : Meon Shore

Stubbington Green will be holding their very own Chariots of Fire Beach Run on Tuesday 25th June from Meon foreshore by the beach chalets.
The run is 4 miles long and apart from the first and last 100 yards is on firm sand, the course is to follow the low water line to Solent Breezes and back. The run has been timed to take place at one of the lowest tide times of the year. At its low point 18:30 you should be able to run nearly 500 yards from the shoreline. You might get your feet wet , so bring a towel!
After the run, weather permitting I will do some sausages in buns (£1.00) and have some soft drinks available , however you are welcome to bring whatever drink you want. ( I enjoy a cold beer). If the weather is poor then we shall retreat to the Osborne View .
As in the film White Tops and shorts would be good and of course plimsoll’s! This is not a race just an excuse for a social on what hopefully will be a lovely summers evening. Hope to see you there .

Monday 3rd June – Social in The Parsons Collar Monday 3rd June is Newbie Night and the end of the Beginners Course, it also coincides with our monthly social in the pub after training at Whiteley.  I hope as many of you as possible will be free to join us, to catch up with old friends and chat to new ones.  It is a great opportunity to welcome the beginners and potential new members into the Club and let them know what a great friendly group we are

6.05 Special - Departs the Old Wickham Halt at 7pm on Friday 26th July
Once again the 6.05 Special will be running up the old Wickham Railway Line and on an out and back course of approximately 6 miles meeting at 6.30pm for a 7pm start.  There will also be a shorter course of 2 miles for any walkers or injured runners.  Hedge End will be joining us and so there is plenty of scope for some friendly rivalry.  The start can be found on the north side of Wickham off Mill Lane which is a short walk from Wickham Square, however there is lots of parking in the cul-de-sac off Mill Lane, right by the start.
We will retire to one of the local hostelries after the event for a post race celebration and debrief.
Final details will be published nearer the time on the website and Facebook so please keep your eyes peeled.  In the meantime mark the date in your diary and let’s hope that if there are leaves on the line they are the right kind of leaves!!

UPCOMING HRRL RACES

Alton 10 (miles) – 5th May 2013 – 10.30 am start
Netley 10K          -19th May 2013 – 10.30 am start

Spring has finally arrived, marathon season has passed and the RR10’s are now underway! We have a fantastic summer of running ahead of us and first up are this season’s remaining two HRRL fixtures, at Alton and Netley. We are seeking a good turnout from the SGR’s men and ladies in order to improve, or at the very least maintain, our currently impressive league standings. More

‘2nd Time trial is this Thursday, 2nd May. Hopefully, as we head to warmer weather, it won't be a repeat of the sleet and arctic temperatures of last month, although it is a Bank Holiday weekend. The route is the usual the 4 miles starting in Eric Road, Stubbington, with many choosing to park in the Community Centre and jog over, having used the facilities. Their is a choice of start times, either 6:30pm or 7pm, with all the results being collated it really makes no difference when you start, as Sally and I will be there timekeeping at the end and counting you all in.

Last month 31 Stubbies braved the cold, and posted a time. Having seen 58 Stubbies at the RR10 we are hoping to see even more faces this month. Can we break the 60 barrier? To add a little spice this year we will be running a little competition and recognising the biggest improvers, but don't worry it is a 'handicap' style so it won't necessarily be the quickest who wins. There will be prizes each month, don't get too excited, and an overall prize at the end of the series.

Looking forward to counting you all in. Andy’

The return of the famous (or is it infamous?!) Stubbie curry nights! By popular demand the club curry night has been resurrected with the first gathering at the Stubbington Tandoori, (35a The Green, Stubbington, Fareham, Hampshire, PO14 2LE) on Thursday 9th May. Early birds can meet at 1900 at the Red Lion PH for an essential warm up, or just go straight to the venue for 1930. So that we can give the restaurant an idea of numbers, please contact Sue Robinson (sue.robinson@cdata.co.uk) by Sunday 5th May if you would like to come along. Partners and friends all welcome – the more the merrier!

Good afternoon to you all!

Just a quick reminder that this lovely village run is taking place once again.  We hope you will be able to come along and take part.  There is a new additional option of a 5K trail cycle – all off road, great for kids!  We are still taking postal entries until 20th April but you can also enter on the day.

The weather is warming up at last… good news.  Fingers crossed for sunshine on the day. I have attached the entry form and a couple of posters / fliers...

Very kind regards. FionaHoughton Trail 2013www.houghton-trail-event.org.uk

Hi All, I'm fairly new to the club and competed in a race at the weekend and it seems that I was only SGR representative. It was the Mel's Milers 10K in Horsham on Sunday 7th April. It was a beautiful sunny morning (for a change!) and the course was multi-terrain. I finished in a PB of 42 mins 41 secs and came 25th out of 281 (it was a weak field!). The link with the results is here, but frustratingly, it does not show me as SGR, as I entered the race before I joined the club and despite my request, they did not update my details. Many thanks John Plomer.

April 21st is of course the London Marathon...it is also a chance to carbo (re)load at Cafe Tusk, a Curry House in Fareham. It is buffet style so you can (re)load as much as you want and at £12.99 an adult, it is excellent value. http://www.cafetusk.co.uk/ If people would like to join me, 7pm arrival for a 7.30 sitting...  my family and a few other stubbies who enjoy a curry please email me. I will then book a table with the restaurant...I will also try to organise a free beer for all runners who wear their 2013 VLM Medal!!! Thanks Lewis - Lewis Chalk

Eastleigh 10k

A full race report will be provided in the Green Runner but in brief, SGR contributed an impressive 60 runners to the Eastleigh 10k, a staggering number of which recorded PB's! Individual Prizes were won by Mark Le Gassick and Andy Simpson in the Vets 40 category and the men's A team (comprising Lewis Chalk, Mark Le Gassick, Andy Simpson and Tom MacSwayne) ran away with 3rd prize in the men's team event. Despite these excellent performances, the day really belonged to both the SGR seasoned runners and the SGR HRRL newbies who all performed fantastically well and made us all proud to be a SGR. Neil R
The Great British Relay is taking place in June 2013 and aims to break the world record. Following on from the Olympic torch relay in 2012 it is an attempt to set the world record for the longest continuous run relay, which currently stands at 5640km; this if successful will be over 7000km.

Full details are available on the website is www.greatbritishrelay.com and the facebook page is http://www.facebook.com/pages/Great-British-Relay/135316153307626 if anyone is interested in signing up. It passing through Stubbie territory early in the morning of June 25th. "Legs" of approximately 10k can be bought by individuals for £30, and the nominated charity is Sue Ryder. Offical Press release here..

Eastleigh 10k - 24th March 2013 - 10:00 am start

Rumour has it that we will have over 60 SGR runners competing in the Eastleigh 10k, which if true, may well be a record turnout at an away fixture so to speak. Please remember that parking is quite tight so please get there early or car share where you can. The race HQ opens at 8:15 am and don't forget to collect your T shirts prior to the race. We hope to have the Stubbington Green Runners flag near the finish line so please look out for that and then head their after the race to meet, cheer and support other SG Runners. We can then return to HQ to see our runners pick up their prizes! Best of luck to all the SGR for the weekend whether running Eastleigh or any other race. Neil R.

We are looking for runners who would like to take part in this 50-mile relay from Emsworth to Basingstoke. Participation is based upon teams of six runners, with runners doing their three legs (of a total 18) each of around 3 to 4 miles mostly off-road, whilst raising funds for charity.

Upcoming HRRL Races
Salisbury 10 miles - 10th March 2013 - 10:30 hrs start
Eastleigh 10K - 24th March 2013 - 10:00 hrs start

As at the 15th February there were 47 Stubbington Green Runners registered for the Eastleigh 10K, which will be a fantastic turn out. For those who have not registered yet, please note that the closing date to enter the race is Wednesday 6th March, so please register asap if you want to add to the Green Army that will be invading Eastleigh in early Spring!

As at the 23rd February, we only had 9 Stubbington Green Runners registered for Salisbury. 6 for the men's team and 3 for the ladies team (of which 1 is currently injured). So if anybody fancies a run along a nice scenic route north of Salisbury following the banks of the River Avon through the gently undulating Woodford Valley with views of the Cathedral Spire then book your place now and help the mens' and ladies teams protect their current excellent league standings as well as having a very enjoyable day out with your fellow Stubbies. If you are waiting for a last minute decision then you can register on the day. It will great to see as many Stubbies as possible there. Neil R

Well done to all who ran the Bramley 20 Sunday, 17th February 2013, race report here...

THE final race of this year´s Todays Runner series takes place on Sunday 3rd March at Staunton Country park.

Parking at Staunton Country Park is limited, and there is a short walk to the start. Unfortunately, the field used last year for parking is waterlogged so it is most probable that runners will need to park in the public car park at a cost of £2/car. Please ensure that you have the correct change with you. Car sharing is strongly recommended and encouraged as last year we are usually close to capacity. Competitors and supporters must follow the instructions of the car park marshals to the correct area as failure to do so could lose the co-operation of the Country Park and future use of this course. Additional parking is available at Havant Thicket which is located 15-20 minutes from the start. more..

Man v Horse 8th June
I am planning to run Man v Horse on the 8th June 2013, the race is 22 miles in the Welsh mountains around Llanwrtyd Wells.
The race has been going since 1980 after an argument in the local pub as too which are quicker horses or runners, you would think it would be very one sided but as you will see the horses are not so quick on the technical and downhill sections. To get an idea of the race youtube man v horse 2012
I am planning to travel to a bunkhouse above the White Hart PH at Talybont on Usk on Friday 7th June, from there it is an hour to the race on the Saturday. Then return and stay Saturday night and have a couple of beers, this is not set in stone and if people would prefer to camp, weather permitting, this may be an option.
If interested please email me on hally.pfc@ntlworld.com or phone me 07917684243

SOUTH DOWNS RELAY

Greetings from your club Captains Sally & Andy, we are looking to see who would be interested in running one of the premier off-road races in the calendar year....the South Downs Relay.  The relay is on Saturday 1st June and covers 97 miles on the day and is an all day race starting with an early start and late finish.   The race starts from Beachy Head and finishing near Winchester taking in some beautiful scenery on the South Downs.

We are hoping to enter 4 teams with 6 people in a team.  Each competitor runs 3 legs over the day, which equates to about 14-17 miles.    Runners are chauffeur driven to each leg, so you don’t need to worry about transport, so you can concentrate on your running.  The South Downs Relay is a great day out with lots of banter between all the teams.

Two pieces of criteria you need to be able to do....is run sub 47 minutes 10K, due to cut off times. Secondly, to be able to recce your 3 legs before the day, so you don’t get lost!  On the recces we have groups of people who go out and practice their legs.  You can pair up with people doing the same leg as you, or somebody doing the leg before or after you.

If you are interested in running, can you please email both Captains.  We are looking to announce the teams just after the AGM, so people can start reccing their legs.  Therefore the deadline for entries is Friday 1st March

The HRRL (Hampshire Road Running League) season is now at the half way mark, with six of the 12 races completed. The tables make encouraging reading, both team wise and individually. We are however suffering this year as the injury curse seems to have hit us hard. The good news though is that Stubbington entry numbers are holding firm, so it is good to see new faces filling the void.  Tables and More...

Ticket to Ryde - RYDE 10 miles - the 7th race in the HRRL series takes place on Sunday 3rd February and is the challenging yet so rewarding Ryde 10 miles. If you are planning on taking a car over to the Island remember that the club is willing to cover travel costs (well the ferry bit anyway), and Wightlink's usually have a special offer available later in January for a car and 4 people. A fifth person can always travel as a foot passenger, if you have room. Also if you do have spare spaces, please could you let me know, as it would be great to maximise any spare seats, if you don't mind sharing of course. If you need a ride to Ryde, let me know I will try and help out. Ferries (to Fishbourne) depart on the hour every hour both ways. The race starts at 11am, so 9am going out will allow ample time to warm up pre race, and 2pm home will allow ample time to warm up in the bar afterwards too;-)

Entries are open until 26th January online www.rydeharriers.co.uk/. There is usually entry on the day, at a surcharge of £2. As of 31st December just 2 very keen Stubbies were entered. Well done to Mark Eaton and Neil Richardson for showing great commitment. Graham Bell gebell@ntlworld.com / 07801 594085

TO all you cake makers out there, could you please spare a little time to make/buy a cake for our Stubbington 10K race please.  Small cakes are always good as they can be wrapped individually.  Cakes can be brought to the kitchen in the community centre on the morning.  Thanks to all in advance! Kathy

The son of an ex colleague of mine really needs some advice and help to focus him on a career path in sport.  He is great with people of all abilities and I think he would be good with kids with disabilities, but his mind is wide open at the moment! He is very motivated and it would be good to get him as much advice and experience as possible.  This is where you come in!  If you think you can offer Ciaran any advice, knowledge or help, or even better some voluntary work experience in a sport related field (so he can get a feel for what he enjoys) please email him at ciaranmanning@hotmail.co.uk Here is an excerp from the email his mum sent me (he has given his permission for it to be published here):

"Ciaran is in year 10 now so not long left at school. He has wanted to work in sport for as long as I can remember, with his ambition to be a sports physiotherapist. Will and I know physio is incredibly competitive and academic and have told him so. For a long time we thought he wouldn't get his GCSE's (he was quite delayed due to health problems) but he is doing amazingly well, working so hard and it is looking like he will get 5 including English and hopefully Maths. He is also taking a BTEC in Sport and doing a GCSE in food tech (help with sports performance) He wrote to Winchester City Council and has work experience with the Sports Development Officer there in the new year, he is also hoping to do some football coaching there with young children in holiday time after his placement. He has also applied to do some voluntary work in the Gym which is attached to his school, which looks as if it is going to come off. He's been in touch with the Saints Foundation as he wanted to do some coaching on their disability football programme, but no joy there. So he is busy trying to get experience. All of that is between playing footie for his team!!

He is great with people, all people, regardless of ability etc. Do you have any ideas of other career paths that he could follow? Or experience he can gain after he has finished what he is doing at the moment? We have talked about coaching, personal trainer etc. Or are there any qualifications that are better than others that you know of? What we don't want is him wasting £32k on a sports science degree or something in the future without a direct career path".

Many thanks

Gill Rose
